Membrane interactions with surfaces, soaps, and proteins

Lipid bilayer membranes constitute an incredibly rich system, whose many varied internal degrees of freedom allow for a wide variety of interesting behaviour. I will review some of the ongoing work in our group, touching on phase separation on solid surfaces, some of the distinct properties of skin (stratum corneum) membranes, and the interactions of bilayers with peptides (important for antibiotic development), and some of the influences of electric fields.
