Memory in Materials

Many materials show hysteretic responses. We show the response of a wide range of materials to cyclic driving. Some materials, like some magnets and martensites, show return point memory, where they remember the microstate, while others, like metallic glasses and VO2 need to be trained before they remember.

For earthquakes the response to tidal driving may be useful for predicting large events.

Reasons for the differences are discussed.
