Numerical methods for fluid-structure interaction with immersed elastic bodies

The mechanical interaction of an incompressible fluid flow with an elastic structure is a multi-physic problem omnipresent in nature and in many engineering fields. One can think, for instance, of the opening/closing dynamics of heart valves when blood is propelled into the arteries and of the wings of a bird interacting with the air or the fins of a fish moving in water. The solid is deformed under the action of the fluid and the fluid flow is perturbed by the moving solid. In this talk we will present an overview of the main numerical difficulties that have to be faced in the computer simulation of incompressible fluid-structure interaction. Most of the solution procedures discussed will be of partitioned nature, in the sense that independent solvers can be used for the fluid and the solid. The discussion will be supported by different numerical examples, including comparisons with experimental data.
