Morphogenesis and Motions in Biological Systems

The constraints of the environment always plays a determinant role in the development of biological systems and dynamical aspects are also important. That’s why we have been investigating the link between morphogenesis in biological systems and their associated motions.
We distinguish two types of motions. First, we have morphogenetic motions which are the consequences of the growth process. This is the case for plants which exhibit interesting slow motions witnessing the underlying microscopic growth mechanisms. We’ll be focusing on the case of simple and compound leaves. Second, we have constraining motions acting as boundary condition for growing biological systems. We’ll explore the case of gorgonians, polyp colonies over a flexible branched skeleton which are under the continuous oscillations of the swell.
