Complex challenges in packing particles
More than 20 years ago Sam Edwards suggested to describe granular materials with a statistical mechanics approach where the mechanically stable packing configurations would correspond to the microstates of the system. While there has been considerable progress on this path, there still remains a large number of open questions about the feasibility of this approach. This talk will discuss recent progress in our understanding of the boundaries of mechanical stability, the role of correlations and the new effects introduced by nonspherical particles.
