Human tactile perception : active exploration with a biomimetic sensor, and a few other things

The human hand is an extraordinary tool which allows us both to manipulate objects with extreme precision and to extract a wealth of information such as their shape, weight and surface texture. These capabilities owe for a large part to the cutaneous tactile sensitivity of hands that provide information regarding the forces acting on the skin. I will present a recent breakthrough in the mechanics of tactile transduction, obtained with a novel type of tactile sensor mimicking the human ?ngertip during active exploration of ?nely textured surfaces. I will focus in particular on the role of exploratory conditions in shaping the subcutaneous mechanical signals.
If there is some time left, I will also tackle the role of fingerprints in human digital touch. Recent studies reveal they mechanically reinforce the tactile stimuli.
