Flow Microsensors : From Insects to MEMS and Back

Jérôme Casas, Paris Sciences Chair & Université de Tours

I will start this talk by making a short excursion into the physical ecology of insects which we study with colleagues of the ESPCI and other physicists of similar spirit. I will then deal with the latest advances in our understanding of insect and man-made biomimetic MEMS hairs, either as individual sensors or within a group of sensors. The ecological context will be also studied, as it explains why transient signals are key, in contrast to the usual way of studying such biophysical systems. I will end my talk with the hope for a flow-sensing camera made of MEMS hairs and how we are approaching this goal.
