A multi particle collision algorithm for simulating immiscible multi-phase flows and wetting

Interfacial displacement in porous media occurs
in many natural processes and technological applications, ranging
from filtering or fuel cells to secondary oil recovery and ground
water management. Despite large advances in recent years the
simulation of multi-phase flows in contact to heterogeneously
wettable pore walls remains a challenging problem. In this talk, we
present a variant of the multiple particle collision method (MPCD)
first proposed by Inoue et.al. that accounts for locally varying wall
wettabilities. In order to demonstrate the versatility of the MPCD
multi-phase algorithm, we consider forced immiscible displacement
through heterogeneous beads packs employed in corresponding wetting
experiments. Angular momentum conservation in the MPCD multi-phase
algorithm allows us to extent its applicability to microfluidic
systems and to study, e.g. the splitting and merging of droplets.
